Family Requirements

  • Age: Hungarian law specifies an age limit for the adoptive parents. Adoptive parents must be at least 16 years older than their adoptive child, but no more than 45 years older. The age difference is calculated based on the age of the younger adoptive parent. If the adoptive children are siblings, the age of the older sibling is taken into consideration.
  • Marriage: Hungarian law does allow single people to adopt, however, Hungarian authorities may not encourage these adoptions based on the strongly held opinion that a child should be raised by a married couple in a traditional family. According to information from the Hungarian Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, adoptions are approved based on the submitted documents and a detailed study of the particular case.
  • Income: There is no income requirement for adoptive parents in Hungary; however, parents must submit proof of their income to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.

Country Information

  • Residency & Travel Requirements: Hungary requires that both parents meet their child prior to completing their adoption. Both The total time required in-country is 35-40 days. Once you have accepted the referral of your child, you will have approximately one month’s notice to travel. Hungarian law requires both adoptive parents to meet the child prior to the adoption.
